Exfoliation is the process of removing the stratum corneum or outermost layer of the epidermis using chemical or physical methods. Chemical exfoliation uses acids to eliminate this layer, while physical or mechanical exfoliation relies on ingredients like scrubs or devices such as microdermabrasion. Exfoliation becomes increasingly important as we age because the rate at which our skin sheds old skin cells slows down, leading to the appearance of dull skin and ultimately more prominent signs of aging. But losing your skin’s ‘glow’ is not an inevitable part of aging - and dull, congested, and lifeless skin is easily revived with an effective exfoliation routine.
How Skin Exfoliation Slows as We Age
So how quickly does the natural exfoliation process slow down with age? It’s quite significant. Children have a cell turnover cycle of about 2 weeks, this increases to 3 or more weeks for teens and younger adults. As adults, it could take anywhere from 30 to 50 days to shed old skin cells, increasing to 90+ days for those over 50 years old. This shift is based on increased cellular senescence as we age - in essence - cells no longer divide at the rate they once did.
The Benefits of Exfoliating for Aging Skin
We know its important to exfoliate to maintain a more radiant complexion, but the link between exfoliation and anti-aging may not be as obvious. Beyond removing dead skin which can give the appearance of an older complexion, certain types of exfoliation such as microdermabrasion play a wider role in anti-aging.
Role in Collagen Production
Exfoliation plays a key role in cell renewal by drawing out dead skin cells that can slow down the process. When you exfoliate, you're essentially clearing the way for new cells to surface, which can lead to a faster turnover rate. This results in a fresher, more youthful appearance with reduced fine lines, improved texture, and a more even skin tone.
Your Skincare Works Harder
Removing stubborn dead skin actually allows expensive topical skincare ingredients to penetrate the skin barrier. Without effective exfoliation, the best anti-aging serums are greatly compromised as they struggle to penetrate and deliver their full benefits to the skin.
Exfoliation Boosts Blood Flow
Exfoliation stimulates blood circulation and skin oxygenation. This reduces inflammation in the skin to reduce signs of aging. Some exfoliating techniques such as microdermabrasion also physically support lymphatic drainage as the device is physically removed across your face and often accompanied by a gentle suction technique to slough away dead skin. This increases blood flow further helping to reduce puffiness for a more rejuvenated and vibrant appearance.
Chemical or Mechanical Exfoliation, Which Is Best?
There are many different types of chemical exfoliants. They typically use acids or enzymes as an active ingredient to encourage cell renewal. Chemical exfoliants are mostly either AHA’s such as lactic, glycolic, or citric acid - or BHA’s such as salicylic acid or tropic acid. These acids are not suitable for all skin types and it is important to consult a dermatologist before introducing one into your skincare routine. Mechanical exfoliation, as mentioned, uses physical tools to achieve results. At Project E Beauty, we are big supporters of mechanical exfoliation - particularly, microdermabrasion - here’s why:
1. It is Suitable for All Skin Types - Microdermabrasion is a very gentle form of exfoliation - chemical exfoliants are sometimes very potent and not well tolerated - it may take some time (and some damage to your skin barrier) to establish the correct chemical exfoliant for your skin type and we just don’t think that’s worth it
2. Multifunctional - microdermabrasion is more than just an exfoliation technique - as touched on above, it supports overall lymphatic and circulatory stimulation to remove stagnant build-up.
3. One-time Investment - unlike skincare topicals that require frequent refills (and why do they all run out at the same time) a microdermabrasion device is a one-time investment that lasts for years at a time.
What are the Benefits of Using a Microdermabrasion Wand At-Home?
At-home microdermabrasion wands typically come with different-sized diamond-encrusted attachments. Microdermabrasion is the prep that gets you ready for the rest of your skincare routine. The benefits are largely similar to professional in-clinic treatments without the price tag
Improved Skin Texture: It helps remove dead skin cells, promoting smoother, more even skin texture.
Reduced Fine Lines and Wrinkles: Regular use can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by stimulating collagen production.
Clearer Skin: It helps unclog pores and reduce acne, leading to clearer, blemish-free skin.
Increased Circulation: The physical exfoliation boosts blood flow, giving the skin a more radiant and youthful glow.
Cost-Effective: A one-time investment in a home device eliminates the need for expensive spa treatments.
Convenience: You can perform treatments in the comfort of your home, saving time and money.
Enhanced Absorption of Skincare: Removing the outer layer of dead skin helps your serums and moisturizers penetrate more effectively.
Lymphatic Drainage: The massaging action can support lymphatic drainage, reducing puffiness and promoting a more contoured appearance.
Microdermabrasion Wand: How to Use?
Use after cleansing, and before other skincare topicals. If you have very dry or taut skin you may want to apply a thin layer of serum or hydrating mist to your skin before the treatment to prevent skin agitation. Increase the intensity level on your device as your skin adjusts. Use smaller attachments around the more delicate eye and nose area. Always follow up with a thick, hydrating moisturizer before sterilizing the device.

The Takeaway: Is Exfoliating Important for Aging Skin?
Exfoliation is an essential step in maintaining healthy, youthful skin, especially as we age. Whether you choose chemical or mechanical exfoliation, understanding your skin’s needs is key to achieving optimal results. Microdermabrasion, in particular, offers a gentle yet effective option that provides multiple benefits, from improved texture and reduced fine lines to enhanced circulation and lymphatic drainage.
By incorporating an at-home microdermabrasion wand into your skincare routine, you can achieve smoother, clearer, and more radiant skin without the high costs of in-clinic treatments. A one-time investment in a device that supports overall skin health is a smart choice for long-term results. Don’t overlook the power of exfoliation — it’s a simple yet powerful way to keep your skin glowing, youthful, and rejuvenated as you age.
